Gap Years

The Leeds Youth Cell Network has always supported the various gap year programs in Leeds. Most recently we have had a number of young people come and work with us for a year from the Transform and N:Fuse gap year programs in Leeds. Below is an article written by some recent gap yearers, Mike and Ele.

What a year this has been! I don’t think I’ve ever been so busy or faced such a variety of challenges, but equally I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun. I’ve learnt so much this year about myself and about God, from big theological principles like Shalom and eschatology to the fact that the greatest chocolate bar in the world is a Cadbury’s Star Bar. One of the best things about this year has been watching young people grow. Countless examples from Abbey Grange, Horsforth and across the Cell Network spring to mind of young people taking on new challenges, from cell leading for the first time to giving out Bibles to everyone in their year. I’ve seen cells grow in size and maturity and people I’d never expect leading fantastic sessions in cells.

I’ve had a brilliant year and can’t quite believe it’s over! It’s been amazing working with such a fantastic team here at LYCN, and I’m going to miss them all next year.

Last year gave me a great opportunity to work with loads of different guys from different backgrounds and places, from helping out at Rock Solid at Temple Moor High, to continuing cell at Boston Spa and Garforth, and helping with the celebrations and peer leaders during the year. Also obviously there was The Great Commission which was an amazing weekend of learning being together and worshipping, but most importantly going out in witness. One of my favourite things about last year was putting together a slide show of all the cells we facilitate and helping write a kind of discipleship training scheme – a series of teaching with follow up weekly booklets. I also enjoyed opportunities to lead different things and the support we all gave each other as a team.
